“A Good Teacher is the Mirror of a Student” - Professor M.S.Rao

“In a completely rational society, the best of us would be teachers and the rest of us would have to settle for something less, because passing civilization along from one generation to the next ought to be the highest honor and the highest responsibility anyone could have.” - Lee Iacocca

Currently there is a lack of connection between parents and children, and between teachers and students. That is one of the reasons love affairs have gone up among the students in the educational institutions as they try to fill their gaps from their friends and colleagues.  Some of the students commit suicide as they are unable to cope up with love failures. Society must take a serious view of this situation. The parents must recognize this challenge and must spend their time regularly with their children who crave for love and affection. And educators must take initiative to address this issue by connecting with students to provide an emotional support apart from inspiring them. They must be friendly with students not only to share knowledge but also to provide psychological support to boost their self-esteem and make them as healthy citizens. They must adopt the following practices to build strong and healthy students:
  • Don’t get complacent. Plan properly for the teaching session to roll out effectively. Take feedback after each teaching session to find out where you went well and wrong. Adopt the ones that worked and analyze the ones that did not work to deliver better in the next session.
  • Realize the fact that you are generating generations. Hence, be careful when you walk your talk in the campus. Students may look at negative things rather than the positive things. Hence, take all efforts to present positive body language to earn respect from your students.
  • Educator’s attitude is very important to achieve teaching takeaways. Demonstrate a positive attitude. Winston Churchill rightly said that attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.
  • Make your teaching sessions student-centric, not teacher-centric. Don’t teach what you know. Find out what students need, acquire knowledge on it, and then teach to connect with them.

Educators must don multiple hats like teachers, counselors, leaders and parents as per the situation to connect with students. Currently the expectations of the students are rising globally. Hence, educators must raise their bar constantly to learn, unlearn and relearn with the changing times and technologies to stand as great educators.

Teaching is a profession of passion. It is the mother of all professions. Unworthy and inefficient educators must not enter this noble profession if they are not passionate, committed and dedicated. Entry to teaching is open to all individuals who are passionate about this profession, and who intend to make a difference in the lives of students.

Educators are intellectuals and must provide solutions to the problems in the society. They cannot be part of the problems. They must be part of the solutions. The society expects a lot from them and they must live up to the expectations to bring out a positive change among students.  Above all, they must remember that a good teacher is the mirror of a student.

“A good teacher is like a candle - it consumes itself to light the way for others.” – Anonymous

“I am a Professor. I Love my Profession” - Professor M.S.Rao

“A teacher who loves learning earns the right and the ability to help others learn.” - Ruth Beechich

Recently one of my relatives asked me, “Why are you inspiring the son of your competitor to pursue PhD? You know that he becomes your competitor and might overtake you as he was 25 years old. He might also overtake your two sons.”  I smiled and said, “I am a professor. I love my profession.” I looked at his face to check whether he received my message. It seemed he did not receive my message properly. I explained to him as follows.

I have the habit of inspiring everyone to pursue education, not for employment but for empowerment and enlightenment. It is my job as a professor! Whenever young boys and girls greets me when I was passing on the road, I stop and enquire them whether they are pursuing education. If they don’t pursue education, I implore them to pursue. If they say that they don’t have money, I tell them to work, earn money and spend some time regularly for education. I hail from humble origins and rose from ranks to the present position of professor. I entered into employment when I was barely 18 years old with little education and then worked hard during the day time and studied during night time to acquire many qualifications including the highest academic qualification - PhD, and finally came up of this level. Since I demonstrated it by setting an example to others, I inspire others to follow my path. Once it is possible for me, it is possible for others as well!

A doctor saves the lives of everyone including his enemy as the profession demands it. An engineer builds infrastructure and works for the betterment of society including his detractors. I belong to the noble profession of teaching which is the mother of all professions. Hence, I preach good things to others. I inspire everyone including my students, competitors and the children of competitors to pursue education. Remember, I am a professor and I love my profession!

I don’t have competitors and enemies as I convert my competitors into collaborators and enemies into friends. Above all, I don’t compete with others because I always compete with myself.  I don’t mix up my personal life with my professional life. I preach my best to impart not only to my sons but also to my students who love me deeply including my detractors. I will not stay away from my responsibility.  I am a professor. I am a preacher. I am a responsible citizen. Above all, I am a responsible global citizen to inspire and contribute my best to make a difference to the world.
