Ever since Daniel Goleman came out with Emotional Intelligence (EI) it invited the attention of many people internationally with Google hits of approximately 9.47 million results with diverse contexts, including education, health, relationships and work. There is a growing interest towards EI in all sectors as it is closely associated with leadership. In fact, leadership success and effectiveness mostly depends on EI. There had been a heated debate among various leadership scholars and practitioners whether leaders are born or made. Daniel Goleman’s EI cleared the debate and concluded that leaders are made rather born as EI helps any ordinary person acquire leadership abilities and skills and excel as a leader.

EI is essential in all industries as we need leaders in all sectors. It is also required in the education sector where educators have to handle emotions, feelings and egos of diversified students in the classroom. The educators must be aware of their own emotions and match their emotions with the students’ emotions as per the situation to create compatibility and chemistry with the students to ensure effective teaching takeaways. The educators must apply different strokes to different students as all students are not alike in their intelligence levels and learning styles. Students in the classroom usually belong to three categories - above average, average and below average in their intelligence levels. They appreciate various learning styles - auditory, visual and kinesthetic. Hence, the educators must change their teaching style as per the learning styles and the intelligence levels of the students. While delivering their teaching sessions they must take feedback by observing the body language of the students in the classroom and change their teaching methods and strategies accordingly.

To conclude, the educators must take various aspects in view while teaching and training in the classroom i.e. catering as per the intelligence level of students and as per their learning styles with the aid of emotional intelligence to achieve the effective teaching takeaways among the students and excel as effective educators.

“Can Students Excel Better Than Their Educators?” - Professor M.S.Rao

In one of my recent leadership training programs a participant asked me a question – why teachers cannot grow while some of their students grow? In fact, it is a rare question I have come across in my lifetime. I responded as follows:

Educators share their knowledge, ideas and insights with their students. They make a difference in the lives of their students with their passion, knowledge and experience. And the students acquire knowledge from their educators and apply it in their real lives and reap rewards greatly. In fact, the application of knowledge is more important than the acquisition of knowledge. Educators have knowledge and ideas which they may not be able to apply in their lives as their main role is to share knowledge as per the expectations of their students and to make them successful. Hence, they are engaged with their task of creating, generating, and sharing their knowledge with others. On the other hand, the students apply the acquired ideas and insights in a number of areas and reap great rewards. Students work very hard in their lives and finally, make it big and achieve greatness. Therefore, the roles of both educators and students are different.

Parents want to see the success of their children. When children succeed the parents are happy by treating their children’s success as their success. Similarly, educators will be happy when they see the success of their students, and they feel that they are successful in their lives. Above all, a true parent’s success lies in the success of their children, and a true educator’s success lies in the success of their students. To conclude, educators remain as educators while the students outsmart their educators and grow to the level of CEOs and great leaders.
