“Is Life all about Learning, Unlearning and Relearning?” – Professor M.S.Rao

“The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.” ― Alvin Toffler

People often talk about continuous learning. But when we learn continuously there is a process of learning that is learning, unlearning and relearning.  We learn certain things as per the present situation and the current needs. And there is a need to change the things as per the changing times and technologies. Hence, we must unlearn certain things that are outdated and relearn certain things that are relevant in the current context.  For instance, when a civilian joins military he must learn the principles and practices of military to become a soldier. When he resigns military and enters into teaching profession as a faculty member, he must unlearn some of the aspects of military and relearn the principles and practices of teaching profession to become an educator. Similarly, when employees leave their organizations and enter into another organization, they must unlearn the organizational culture and rules and regulations of the previous one and relearn about the new organization. They must also unlearn the client requirements of the previous organization and relearn about the new client requirements to succeed as professionals.

Most baby boomers are not acquired with internet technology as they were born at a different time. But they began learning about technology and unlearning certain habits and relearning about technology to remain relevant with the present world. When we look at Gen Y, they are very smart and quick to adapt to technology. People must learn, unlearn and relearn some of the aspects irrespective of their generations.

Charles Darwin once remarked, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent. It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.” Hence, adaptability is the key to success in the present global environment.  To conclude, people must adapt as per the situation and occasion to ensure proper fit to achieve the expected objectives and goals. Therefore, life is all about learning, unlearning and relearning.

“To survive, to avert what we have termed future shock, the individual must become infinitely more adaptable and capable than ever before. We must search out totally new ways to anchor ourselves, for all the old roots - religion, nation, community, family, or profession - are now shaking under the hurricane impact of the accelerative thrust. It is no longer resources that limit decisions, it is the decision that makes the resources.” ― Alvin Toffler, Future Shock
